Huntingtown Man Scores $50,000 Lottery Prize

Buddy system key to man's third-tier win

BALTIMORE (Nov. 30, 2016)—A retired newspaperman who spent the majority of his life concerned with fluctuating circulation numbers saw a set of numbers on Sunday that projected a whole lot of growth in his Maryland Lottery revenue. The Powerball ticket he purchased during the weekend's rising jackpot matched four of six numbers and the Power Ball, giving him a $50,000 prize.

The Calvert County winner, who elected to remain anonymous to the public, is a former advertising salesman who retired after more than 40 years in the newspaper business including jobs at Washington, D.C. area newspapers. He and a Moose Lodge friend are Powerball jackpot chasers and bought a batch of tickets as the jackpot hit the $420 million mark for the Nov. 26 drawing.

"We're partners in terrible pool play, crabbing and Powerball," said the winner.

They each purchased several tickets from a variety of southern Maryland Lottery retailers for the upcoming drawing. On Sunday, the lucky 70-something who dubbed himself "The Silver Fox" checked his quick-pick ticket against a copy of the numbers. He was startled to see that several numbers matched.

"I didn't tell anyone but my good friend," said the loyal player.

His winning Powerball ticket came from the Lothian Citgo located at 5423 Southern Maryland Boulevard in Lothian. In October, the lucky Anne Arundel County retailer also sold a $50,000 winning Triple Green Crossword scratch-off to Bertie Raemsch of Lothian. Because the jackpot was hit, the prize for the upcoming Nov. 30 drawing is $40 million with a cash option of $24.2 million.
