Recent Lottery Winners Score Big Bucks

Fort Washington man finds second prize twice as nice

Lottery luck is even lovelier the second time around, according to a Diamond Spectacular scratch-off winner from Fort Washington who just claimed a $50,000 prize.

The 63-year-old retiree found his second big Lottery win after fueling his truck at St. Barnabas Gulf located at 6720 St. Barnabas Road in Oxon Hill. He filled the tank and bought a $20 Diamond Spectacular scratch-off. When he returned to his truck and scratched off the instant ticket, the Prince George's County resident realized he would soon be filling his pockets as well.

The lucky player dashed back into the store and delivered a hefty tip to Ben, the retailer's clerk, before hurrying home. He often purchases instant tickets at St. Barnabas Gulf and says that lucky Ben, while working at a different gas station, sold him his other winning scratch-off that delivered a large prize.

Savings accounts are the most likely destination for his windfall, he said, adding that the extra funds will give him extra peace of mind.

Patricia Marshalek of Clinton is enjoying her second $50,000 Bonus Match 5 win

Wins $50,000 for a second time on Bonus Match 5

Talk about your Maryland Lottery winner déjà vu! Patricia Marshalek of Clinton just won $50,000 on the same Lottery game with a ticket bought at the same retailer and from the same person operating the terminal. Her top-prize Bonus Match 5 wins were years apart but many elements of her experience were exactly the same, she said.

Although the Prince George's County resident usually plays her own numbers, she won both times with a quick-pick ticket. Patricia's lucky retailer is Coventry Way Exxon, where she plays Bonus Match 5 and Pick 4 several times a week. She usually buys her tickets on Mondays, playing her own set of numbers in both games for the week and checking all of the winning numbers on Sundays.

When she checked her numbers and realized she had her second $50,000 win, Patricia kept quiet for about an hour before deciding to tell her mother. She started to share the great news with her sister but decided to keep the win a secret from everyone else.

The semi-retired Lottery player is currently working as a substitute teacher in Prince George's County. She plans to use her winnings for holiday shopping and will pay bills, boost her savings account and donate to the Humane Society.

Also a winner is Coventry Way Exxon located at 6441 Coventry Way in Clinton. The retailer will receive a $500 bonus from the Lottery for selling a top-prize ticket in the Oct. 22 drawing.

The Price is Right Scratch-off Gives Forklift Operator a $50,000 Prize

Less than a week before the Maryland Lottery's final drawing for The Price is Right second-chance promotion, a Capitol Heights man claimed the $50,000 top prize on The Price is Right scratch-off. The forklift operator purchased his winning ticket at Riverdale BP.

The winner, who came to Lottery headquarters with his daughter and a friend, enjoys playing scratch-offs and was surprised by his big win.

The 49-year-old Prince George's County resident plans to use his prize to pay bills and possibly take a vacation. He isn't the only one who wins. For selling the $50,000 winning top-prize ticket, Riverdale BP at 5500 Kenilworth Ave. in Riverdale will receive a $500 bonus.

Lottery Excitement Ends Quiet Day Off for Medical Worker

A Temple Hills man who spends long hours in operating rooms assisting in trauma surgery said he didn't mind giving up the peace and quiet typical of his day off. The excitement of winning $50,000 on a Maryland Lottery Ravens scratch-off was worth it!

"I was out running errands on my day off, one of which was getting my Lottery tickets for the week, when I saw what looked like a brand new pack of scratch tickets in the store's display," he said. The 50-year-old medical specialist told Lottery officials that he's always had a lucky feeling about new books of Lottery scratch-offs. As luck would have it, the management of 24 Express at 4451 Wheeler Road in Oxon Hill had just put a new book of $5 Ravens scratch-offs on sale.

The loyal player bought the games and went home, where he mowed the lawn, took a nap, prepared lunch and scratched off the tickets. "I always start with the numbers before scratching the prize amount," he said. "Right there on the first line was a match, so I was happy knowing that I'd at least win my money back."

When the Prince George's County man got around to totaling up his prize, he dropped his fork in shock. "$50,000 was so unbelievable that I just knew it couldn't be," he said. "The game directions were pretty clear, but I kept searching for the rule that would take away the money. I actually pinched myself to make sure I hadn't fallen back to sleep."

The happy winner surprised his wife with the news when she got home from work. "She nearly passed out," he said. "I had to steady her."

The prize comes at a great time because the couple is taking care of his mother, who has several health issues. The family is also down to one car after a recent mishap. "I see the miracles surgeons perform in operating rooms every day, so I know they happen," he said. "While this isn't a life and death thing, this win really is a miracle for us."

Anne Arundel County Woman's Scratch-off Luck Continues

While winning Maryland Lottery games involves luck, not skill, some players claim big prizes repeatedly and appear to have a knack for winning with scratch-offs. Bertie Raemsch of Lothian is one of those lucky people whose visit to Lottery headquarters on Tuesday was far from her first trip.

Bertie claimed a $50,000 top prize she won over the holiday weekend playing the Triple Green Crossword game. The $5 instant ticket is the latest Lottery scratch-off to deliver instant cash to her pocketbook, said the Anne Arundel County woman.

"I stopped by the Citgo station near my house to pick up some snacks for my husband and decided to get him some tickets. He's a big player," Bertie told Lottery officials. Recognizing Triple Green Crossword as her husband's favorite new game, she bought a few scratch-offs.

"At the last minute I decided to get one for myself," she said. Scratching off her instant ticket later at home, the 66-year-old mother, grandmother and great-grandmother hardly reacted when she uncovered the $50,000 win. "To tell the truth, I barely reacted at all," she said. "I just didn't get excited, just stayed quiet and calm."

This was one of many visits she has made to Lottery headquarters to claim big prizes. "I've won $50,000 before, $10,000 twice and $5,000 once," she said. "These scratch-offs have been very lucky for me."

The happy woman plans to pay off two family cars and begin holiday preparations with her new prize. Bertie found the third of the game's six $50,000 top prizes. There are still nine $10,000 unclaimed prizes in the game along with thousands of prizes ranging from $5 to $1,000.

Bertie's lucky scratch-off came from the Lothian Citgo at 5423 Southern Maryland Boulevard in Lothian. The Anne Arundel County business will receive a $500 bonus from the Lottery for selling a top-prize ticket in the game.
