PATUXENT RIVER, Md. (Oct. 22, 2016)—With former Naval Air Station Patuxent River Command Master Chief Jeffrey Owejan joining the crew of USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70), NAS CMDCM (AW/SW) Kevin Guy has come aboard the installation to assume his duties.

Guy had heard of Pax River before arriving just a couple weeks ago, but had never been here and assumed it was a small base in a remote area.

"I was pleasantly surprised by how large and beautiful it is here," he said. "And I didn't expect all the wooded areas on base."

As command master chief, Guy is responsible for the personal and professional development of approximately 220 NAS Sailors, and for ensuring there is active communication throughout the chain of command.

"I'm the senior enlisted adviser to the [NAS] commanding officer working in conjunction with the executive officer for the formulation and execution of policies regarding morale, welfare, job satisfaction, training and family readiness," Guy explained.

Since stepping into the position, Guy has been busy traveling around base meeting people and learning how things operate.

"It's a whole new set of challenges different from my last [air squadron] command," he said. "Not everyone works in headquarters; the NAS staff is spread out over the entire base and I'm learning a lot of new things."

His intention is to follow the blueprint laid out by his predecessors.

"I want to continue to build on the relationships with tenant commands that were put in place by my predecessors and continue the tradition of excellence that seems to already exist here," he noted. "Great professionals came before me and I'm going to make sure I continue that mindset."

Guy, who was born in Brooklyn, New York but moved to Olive Branch, Mississippi as a boy, is married with three children—a son and two daughters, ages 11, 9 and 8 years—and each has already adapted to their new home.

"They're happy kids who make friends easily," he said. "Wherever we go, they get adjusted quickly."
