Chinese Tourist Killed Crossing Road in P.G. Co.

The victim, Yanhua Zhu, 74, resided in China and was visiting the United States with family

LAUREL, Md. (Oct. 5, 2016)—Shortly before 7:30 p.m. Tuesday evening, Maryland State Police, College Park Barrack responded to a single vehicle collision with a pedestrian on southbound US Route 1 (Baltimore Avenue) south of Locust Grove Drive, Laurel, Maryland. The preliminary investigation revealed a Ford pick-up truck was traveling southbound on Rt. 1 when the pedestrian attempted to cross the road and was struck by the truck.

The deceased and family were traveling from Pennsylvania to Washington, D.C. when their tour bus stopped to take a break. The victim, Yanhua Zhu, 74, resided in China and was visiting the United States with family. Zhu was transported to Prince George's Hospital where she was pronounced deceased. The driver and sole occupant of the Ford was identified as Frederic Silver, 56, of Laurel, Maryland and was not injured in this collision.

Maryland State Police, Crash Team re-constructionist conducted the detailed crash reconstruction and there was no indication of impairment at the time of this investigation. The cause of the collision has not been determined at this time. Two lanes of Rt. 1 were closed this evening as a result of this collision and the State Highway Administration handled the lane closures. One lane was re-opened within two hours preceding this collision.
