LA PLATA, Md. (Aug. 22, 2016)—Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) is seeking community input and suggestions for the name of a new elementary school that will open for the 2018-19 school year. The school is planned on a site off Billingsley Road in White Plains, located near the Greenhaven Run and Worthington neighborhoods. The new school will be the school system's 22nd elementary school.
The CCPS School Naming Advisory Committee will consider submitted names and present options to the Charles County Board of Education, who will ultimately vote and select the school's name. Board of Education policy requires that schools be named for a person or place of significance to Charles County residents. If recommending the name of a person, the recommended person must be deceased.
Anyone interested in recommending a name to the committee must present written documentation, not to exceed one typed page, front and back, of the significance of the proposed name. Supporting documents may also be included, but should not be original copies. Submitted materials will not be returned.
Proposals should be mailed by Friday, Sept. 9 to Shelley Mackey, School Naming Committee, Charles County Public Schools, P.O. Box 2770, La Plata, MD 20646 or email suggestions to smackey@ccboe.com .
A committee, composed of eight members chosen by the Board, will research, screen and recommend names to the Board. The Board of Education will make the final selection after the committee presents it recommendations. The committee may hold a public hearing to gather community input on proposed names and suggestions. Additional information will be published later this fall.
