ANNAPOLIS (July 29, 2016)—In reaction to
a comment in an email by a highly
placed Democratic National Committee staffer (National Finance Director Jordan Kaplan), Comptroller Peter Franchot has sent a letter to Donna Brazile, interim chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee, inviting her to tour Cambridge, an historic and culturally rich city of 12,500 residents in Dorchester County.
In the letter, the Comptroller said if Kaplan had "spent more than a few hours in Cambridge—visiting its charming main street, meeting its warm and welcoming residents, enjoying its scenic views, and learning about its history and culture—I trust that he would have reached a different conclusion than the one he ignorantly shared."
In the email, recently
released by Wikileaks, Kaplan was asked by a colleague in May about his visit to
Cambridge, on Maryland's Eastern Shore. Kaplan wrote: "It was fine. Shitty
town and were(sic) only stayed for a few hours. We spent the night in
Annapolis."
Mr. Franchot, who has visited Cambridge's restaurants, shops and businesses many times during his 10-year tenure, wrote that he would be delighted to accompany Chairwoman Brazile on a tour of local establishments, including Snappers Waterfront Café, the budding RaR Brewery located in the heart of the historic district and to longtime downtown anchors Craig's Drug Store and Simmons Center Market that have served local residents for more than a century.
"I'm confident that after visiting Cambridge," the Comptroller wrote, "you would share the affection and appreciation for Cambridge that I have."
