CALLAWAY, Md. (April 21, 2016)—Dominion Resources has awarded a $50,000 grant to Morgan State University's Patuxent Environmental & Aquatic Research Laboratory (PEARL). PEARL is located on the grounds of Jefferson Paterson Park and Museum in St. Leonard, Calvert County.
The funds will be used for PEARL's blue crab population study and an interactive web-based tool that provides data about the crabs to watermen and the general public.
PEARL is also instrumental in the effort to establish an oyster farming industry in Maryland. In addition to providing oyster spat (seeds) to local watermen, they also provide scientific knowledge to the aquaculture farmers to assist them in their oyster growing operations.
The grant to PEARL is one of several awards totaling $1 million made through Dominion's philanthropic arm, the Dominion Foundation, to 67 organizations in 10 states and the District of Columbia. Since 2003, Dominion has donated $26.7 million to support a wide variety of environmental projects.
