LA PLATA, Md. (Jan. 27, 2016)—Charles County Commissioner Vice President Debra M. Davis, Esq. (District 2) has been elected to serve as chair of the Tri-County Council for Southern Maryland (TCCSMD). Her one-year term began Thursday, Jan. 21. This is the second year Davis is serving on the executive board, and she has been a full council member since 2010.
She is the first African-American to serve as TCCSMD chair. Davis also chairs the Regional Infrastructure Advisory Committee of TCCSMD. As a leader in our community, Davis currently serves as the first African-American chair of the Local Government Insurance Trust Board of Trustees.
"I am excited about TCCSMD's mission to advocate for regional transportation and economic development issues, and honored to serve as chair," Davis said.
Davis, a local practicing attorney, was first elected to the Charles County Board of Commissioners in 2010, and is currently serving her second term. She serves on several statewide, regional, and local boards. Davis was named as one of Maryland's Top 100 women in 2012 and 2014 by The Daily Record for her leadership and community service. A consummate student of leadership, Davis completed the University of Maryland's Academy for Excellence in Local Governance professional development program in August 2012. She is a 2009 graduate of Leadership Southern Maryland, a 1999 Maryland State Bar Association Leadership Fellow, and served on the African American Leadership Summit for the U.S. Congress in 2004.
Davis holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Maryland in Criminology and a Juris Doctorate from the University of Baltimore School of Law.
Davis will serve in the chair capacity leading all executive board and council meetings, as well as appointing standing and special committees.
TCCSMD is a cooperative planning and development agency formed in 1964 to foster social and economic development of Southern Maryland region. TCCSMD serves as a forum for resolution of region-wide issues and attainment of regional goals at the federal, state, and local levels.
