House Fires in Huntingtown, La Plata



Minor House Fire in Huntingtown

A small fire caused $500 in damages to a 2 story single family dwelling located in the 2900 block of Hunting Creek Road in Huntingtown. The fire occurred around 4:12 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 19.

Investigators say the fire was accidental and originated from renovation work inside the basement. The damage was contained to the bottom of the staircase.

The fire was discovered by the occupants.

There were no injuries as a result of the fire.

The one-alarm fire involved twenty firefighters from Huntingtown, Dunkirk, North Beach, St. Leonard, and Prince Frederick volunteer fire departments. It took approximately one minute to bring the fire under control.

Deputy fire marshal M. Decker investigated.

Space Heater Fire Causes Significant Damage to La Plata Home

A fire, which was started by an electric space heater, caused an estimated $25,000 in damages to the structure and $15,000 in damages to the contents of a La Plata home. The fire occurred around 4:48 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 16. The two story single family dwelling is located in the 9100 block of Holly Court.

Investigators say the occupants were woken up and alerted by the smoke alarm. After searching for the source of the smoke, they discovered a fire in the basement and called 911. The fire was contained to the basement.

The one-alarm fire involved thirty firefighters from La Plata VFD, Waldorf VFD, Potomac Heights VFD, Indian Head VFD, Tenth District VFD, Bell Alton VFD, Hughesville VFD, and the Naval District Fire Department. It took approximately ten minutes to bring the fire under control.
