Metropolitan Commission Supports St. Mary's Caring

CALIFORNIA, Md. (Jan, 14, 2016)—On December 17, employees of the Metropolitan Commission presented Kristine Millen, Director of St. Mary's Caring, a check in the amount of $3,109. This donation was the result of employee volunteer fundraising efforts.

This year's fundraising chairman, Ed Hogan, Superintendent of Wastewater Collections, as well as other employee volunteers, kicked off fundraising efforts in July with a cookout. Other fundraisers included 50-50 raffles, luncheons and the annual Dessert Auction and Soup Cook Off. Fundraising efforts concluded at the annual employee pot luck luncheon complete with auction items crafted and donated by Metcom employees.

St. Mary's Caring is located at 20850 Langley Road, Lexington Park. This community based, non-profit organization serves breakfast and lunch, free of charge Monday through Saturday. In 2014, nearly 25,000 meals were served to those in need. Additionally, the organization provides weekly groceries for the neediest families at Lexington Park Elementary and George Washington Carver elementary schools during the summer break.

"St. Mary's Caring serves the Lexington Park area which is our largest service area. Helping them out allows us to contribute to many of our own customers in this particular area," said Hogan.

Contributing to a local charity has been a longstanding tradition at the Metropolitan Commission in conjunction with the annual employee potluck luncheon. To learn more or to volunteer with St. Mary's Caring, please visit their website at www.stmaryscaring.org or call 301.863.5700.
