Shanks Leads Demo in Jan. 10 NBC4 Health and Fitness Expo

Make your resolution to be healthier this year and join Debi Shanks, physical fitness coordinator, at the 2016 NBC4 Health and Fitness Expo. The annual expo will be held on Saturday, Jan. 9 and Sunday, Jan. 10 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center (801 Mount Vernon Place Northwest, Washington, DC, 20001), beginning at 9 a.m. Shanks will lead the older adult fitness demo on Sunday, Jan. 10 at 2:30 p.m. on the main stage. The demo will feature seated and standing exercises with several local seniors supporting Shanks.

“I’m so excited for this opportunity to showcase our seniors and represent Charles County,” Shanks said.

All ages are encouraged to attend. During this free event, participants can enjoy fitness classes, health screenings, and numerous vendors. New this year is the Yoga Weekend stage, opening at 9 a.m. First 50 participants will receive a free yoga mat. Also new is the Healthy Book Festival, featuring book signings by favorite authors.

SKYWARN Winter Storm Training Offered Jan. 20

The National Weather Service (NWS) Forecast Office and the Charles County Office of Emergency Management is hosting a SKYWARN® Winter Storm training on Wednesday, Jan. 20 at the Charles County Government Building (200 Baltimore Street, La Plata) from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The SKYWARN Winter Storm course provides an in depth training of winter weather hazards and the role of spotters during these events. Topics to be covered include:

• Winter weather hazards in the Mid-Atlantic

• Formation and development of winter storms

• Winter weather statistics

• Winter preparation and safety

• NWS winter weather products

• The role of a SKYWARN spotter in winter weather

An NWS meteorologist will teach this free class and provide related materials. Participants for this course must have completed the SKYWARN Basic Spotter course and be 14 years of age and older. Registration is required. Visit charlesctyskywarnwinterstorms.eventbrite.com to register.

Registration Open for High School Prep Basketball and Cheer Leagues

Charles County middle school students can now register to participate in the high school prep basketball league and cheer program. While representing their school, this competitive basketball league and cheer program is designed to prepare middle school students for high school level athletics.

There will be an eight game regular season with playoffs. All games and practices will be on weeknights with the exception of the post season tournament. Players can only play at the middle school community center that they currently attend. Students attending private school must play for the center in their appropriate school zone.

This program is open to all Charles County students in grades sixth through eighth for the 2015-2016 school year. Divisions include the following:

• Sixth grade boys prep basketball

• Seventh grade boys prep basketball

• Eighth grade boys prep basketball

• Sixth, seventh, and eighth grade girls prep basketball

• Sixth, seventh, and eighth grade prep cheer
