13 Year-old Girl Charged for Setting Multiple Fires Inside Occupied Home

LEXINGTON PARK, Md. (December 30, 2015)—Deputy State Fire Marshals have charged a thirteen year-old female with arson charges stemming from a fire that occurred last night at 11:16 p.m. located at 21536 Lynn Drive in Lexington Park

Investigators were requested by firefighters after extinguishing a bedroom fire inside the two-story, single family dwelling. Marshals determined the fire was an incendiary act and later determined the fire department had responded earlier in the evening for a small fire involving a lamp and clothes.

During the course of the investigation the homeowner advised they had extinguished other small fires inside the same bedroom but did not call 911.

A total of nine people were inside the home at the time of the last fire being discovered. The juvenile charged was not a resident of the home but was a guest of the homeowners’ children. Although no injuries occurred during the incident, the fire caused an estimated $8,000 in damage.

The juvenile has been charged with 1st Degree Arson, 1st Degree Malicious Burning and Reckless Endangerment. The juvenile was transported to the Department of Juvenile Services, Waxters Children Center in Laurel. A motive for the fire has not been established.
