Local Government Schedule Changes for Christmas, New Year Holidays



Calvert County Government

The Calvert County Board of County Commissioners announced that county offices will close Thursday, Dec. 31 at noon and close Friday, Jan. 1, 2016 in observance of the New Year’s holiday. In addition:

• The three county senior centers will close at noon on Thursday, Dec. 31 and Meals on Wheels will be delivered. The centers will close Friday, Jan.1 and there will be no Meals on Wheels New Year’s Day.

• Mt. Hope, Northeast and Southern community centers will close Thursday, Dec. 31 at noon and close New Year’s Day.

• County bus service will end at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 31 and close New Year’s Day. Normal operating hours resume on Saturday, Jan. 2.

• Flag Ponds Nature Park will close Thursday, Dec. 31 and New Year’s Day.

• Kings Landing Park and Battle Creek Cypress Swamp will close at noon on Thursday, Dec. 31 and close Jan. 1.

• Calvert Marine Museum will close at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 31 and close New Year’s Day.

• All county convenience centers and the Appeal Landfill will close Dec. 31 at 4 p.m. and close New Year’s Day. Normal operating hours will resume Saturday, Jan. 2.

• Edward Hall Aquatic Center will close at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 31 and be closed New Year’s Day. Normal hours will resume Saturday, Jan. 2.

• Calvert Library locations will open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 31 and close New Year’s Day. The libraries will open with normal hours Saturday, Jan. 2.

• Chesapeake Hills Golf Course will be open regular operating hours New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

Charles County Government

The Charles County Commissioners wish to remind residents of the following offices and facility schedule changes for the New Year’s holiday on Thursday, Dec. 31 and Friday, Jan 1.

Wednesday, Dec. 23 and Wednesday, Dec. 30:

• Charles County Government administrative offices will close at 2 p.m.

Thursday, Dec. 24:

• All Charles County Government offices and the Tri-County Animal Shelter in Hughesville will be closed.

• VanGO: Last VanGO departures from the Waldorf transfer point at 5:30 p.m. on the 301 Connector, Business A, Business B, and Charlotte Hall routes. Last departures from the Waldorf transfer point at 6 p.m. on the Berry Road, Indian Head, Pinefield, St. Charles A, St. Charles B, and St. Charles C routes. Last departures from the La Plata transfer point at 5:30 p.m. on the 301 Connector, Bryans Road, and Nanjemoy routes. Last departures from the La Plata transfer point for Newburg at 4:30 p.m. and La Plata at 6 p.m.

• The Charles County Landfill and Recycling Center on Billingsley Road in Waldorf, and the Pisgah Recycling Center on Route 425 in Pisgah will close at 2 p.m.

• The Crain Memorial Welcome Center will be open.

• Elite Gymnastics and Recreation Center, Port Tobacco Recreation Center, all community centers and the Lackey, Donald M. Wade Aquatic Center, and North Point High indoor pools will be closed.

• The Nanjemoy Community Center and all other Senior Centers will be closed.

• Parks open for walk-in use during daylight hours.

• Charles County Public Library (All branches) will be closed.

• Charles County Health Department will be closed.

Friday, Dec. 25:

• All Charles County Government offices and the Tri-County Animal Shelter in Hughesville will be closed

• VanGO services will not be operating.

• The Elite Gymnastics and Recreation Center, Nanjemoy Community Center, Port Tobacco Recreation Center, all Community Centers, and Lackey, Donald M. Wade Aquatic Center, and North Point High indoor pools will be closed.

• The Nanjemoy Community Center and all other Senior Centers will be closed.

• Parks open for walk-in use during daylight hours.

• White Plains Golf Course will be closed.

• Charles County Public Library (All branches) will be closed and will re-open on Monday, Dec. 28.

• The Crain Memorial Welcome Center and Port Tobacco Village (Port Tobacco Courthouse, Burch House, Stagg Hall) are Closed.

• Charles County Health Department will be closed.

• The Charles County Landfill and Recycling Center on Billingsley Road in Waldorf, and the Pisgah Recycling Center on Route 425 in Pisgah will be closed.

Every-other-week curbside recycling collection:

• Residents following the Friday “A” Week Schedule will have their recyclables picked up on Saturday, Dec. 26.

• Friday yard waste collection will be picked up on Saturday, Dec. 26. For more information about recycling or yard waste collection, call the Department of Public Works, Environmental Resources Division, at 301-932-3599.

Saturday, Dec. 26:

• Tri-County Animal Shelter will be closed.

Thursday, Dec. 31:

Charles County Public Schools

All Charles County public schools will be closed for winter break from Wednesday, Dec. 23 through Friday, Jan. 1. Schools reopen for students on Monday, Jan. 4. Administrative offices are closed Dec. 24 and Dec. 25, and Dec. 31 and Jan. 1. The Jesse L. Starkey Administration Building will operate from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. during winter break.

The following is the indoor pool schedule for Henry E. Lackey and North Point high schools and the Donald M. Wade Aquatic Center at St. Charles High School:

•  Wednesday, Dec. 23, open from 1 to 8 p.m.;

•  Closed Dec. 24 and Dec. 25;

•  Dec. 26 and Dec. 27, 12 to 6 p.m.;

•  Dec. 28 through Dec. 30, 1 to 8 p.m.;

•  Closed Dec. 31 and Jan. 1; and

•  Jan. 2 and Jan. 3, 12 to 6 p.m.

St. Mary's County Government

All St. Mary's County Government Administrative Offices will close at 12 p.m. on December 24 and December 31, and will be closed Friday, December 25, 2015 for the Christmas holiday and Friday, January 1, 2016 for the New Year's holiday.

The St. Andrews Landfill and the six Convenience Centers will be closed on Friday, December 25 in observance of Christmas and Friday, January 1 in observance of New Year's. In addition, the six convenience centers will open early for operations the week of December 21 - 24 (specifically 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.) The early opening is a convenience to our customers and allows for the anticipated increase in usage of the facilities by County residents during the busiest time of the holiday season. Landfill hours of operation will remain 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. during this time.

As a reminder, Christmas trees will be collected at the landfill and convenience centers free of charge. Undecorated trees may be placed in designated areas between December 26 and January 31. Last year, the County collected nearly 5 tons of Christmas trees, which were mixed with the collected yard waste and ground into mulch. Almost 5,000 tons of mulch is produced annually at the St. Andrews Landfill site and provided to county citizens free of charge while supplies last.

All three St. Mary's County Library locations (Charlotte Hall, Leonardtown and Lexington Park) will be closed Thursday - Sunday, December 24 - 27 for Christmas. The libraries will close at 5 p.m. on Thursday, December 31 and remain closed on Friday, January 1 for New Year's.

All three Senior Activity Centers (Garvey, Loffler and Northern) will be closed Friday, December 25 for Christmas and Friday, January 1, 2016 for New Years. There will be no home delivered meals on those days.

St. Mary's Transit System (STS)

On Thursday, December 24 (Christmas Eve), all public and ADA transportation bus services will operate until 8 p.m.

STS bus service will not operate Christmas Day (December 25) or New Years Day (January 1, 2016). STS bus service will operate normally all other times.

St. Mary's County Public Schools

All St. Mary's County Public Schools and Offices will be closed to the public from Monday, December 21, 2015 through January 1, 2016. All schools and offices will reopen on Monday, January 4, 2016.

NAS Patuxent River Holiday Gate Closings

Beginning Tuesday, December 15, 2015, NAS Patuxent River Gate 3 will be closed until January 10, 2016, due to the holiday period. Motorists utilizing the Maryland Route 235 (MD 235) from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. may experience heavy traffic during the morning rush hour. The St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office will have additional patrol units in the area monitoring traffic conditions and taking enforcement actions as deemed appropriate.

Holiday Gate Schedule (from NAS Patuxent River):

NAS Patuxent River Gate 3 and Webster Field Back Gate will be CLOSED from Dec. 15 - Jan. 10 during the holiday period.

• Gate 1 will maintain normal hours of operation, 24 hours a day, seven days a week during the holiday period.

• Gate 2 will maintain normal hours of operation (5: 30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.) during the holiday period.

• Gate 3 will be CLOSED from Dec. 15 - Jan. 10. Normal operations resume Jan. 11.

• Webster Field main gate will be open and manned as normal through the holiday period. The Back Gate will remain closed from Dec. 15 - Jan. 10 and will open for normal operations Jan. 11.

• Solomon's NRC will remain open and manned as normal during the holiday period.

• All gates will resume normal operations on Jan. 11.
