Bowling Drive Closed June 6-7

Bowling Drive, off Route 6, in Charlotte Hall will be closed to thru-traffic between Kentucky Avenue and Whisper Creek Court on Saturday, June 6 and Sunday, June 7 for pipe repair. The road will be closed at 8 a.m. on June 6, and re-open at 8 p.m. on June 7, weather permitting.

Signs will be posted identifying the closure and detour routes. The road closure may be postponed due to extended inclement weather or other conditions that may cause construction delays.

Vanpools Available From White Plains to Fort Meade

Vanpools are now commuting from White Plains, Md. to the United States Defensive Information School (DINFOS), 6500 Maples Road, Fort Meade. Riders can take advantage of the $130 transit benefit, as well as help reduce highway traffic.

Work Hours:

Monday through Thursday – 6:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Friday – 6:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., and every other Friday 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Counselor-In-Training Camp Offers Leadership Skills for Young Adults

The Department of Community Services, Recreation Division is offering a Counselor-in-Training Summer Camp Program (CIT), an informative and fun leadership camp. Students between grades nine and 12 will train for positions as camp counselors, managers, or recreation leaders. CIT provides training in teaching techniques, and special need campers, as well as becoming CPR and first aid certified.

The two-week program is offered at the Somers Community Center (300 Willow Lane, La Plata) from July 6 to July 17. The camp fee is $300 for residents and $325 for non-residents. Online registration is available at www.CharlesCountyParks.com.

CIT participants must possess an interest in working with youth, and display high energy, enthusiasm, and a positive attitude. Attendees will need to provide their own lunch, snacks, drinks, and dress appropriately for the day’s activities.

Charles County Promotes Diabetes Awareness at Education Forum

Diabetes is a disease affecting about 29.1 million Americans, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 2012 study. To raise awareness and education about this disease, the Charles County Area Council of Aging is hosting the 2015 Diabetes Education Forum: Preventing Complications and Improving Patient Outcomes on Thursday, June 11 at the Richard R. Clark Senior Center (1210 Charles Street, La Plata) from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

During the forum, participants will learn about clinical outcomes for persons with diabetes, and caring for diabetes patients. The event features presentations by Dr. Ashvin J. Patel, internal medicine; Liza Furlow, registered dietician; and Keisha Lewis, occupational therapist registered/licensed and certified diabetes educator. Presentations will be video taped for future viewing on Channel 95.

Charles County Commissioners’ June Town Hall Meeting Schedule

The public is invited to attend the quarterly Board of County Commissioners’ Town Hall Meeting as scheduled below. In addition to the town hall meetings hosted by individual Commissioners throughout the year, the full Board of County Commissioners will hold quarterly town hall meetings, with locations rotating throughout the four Commissioner Districts. The purpose of town hall meetings is to take questions from those in attendance and discuss items important to the citizens and the community. All five elected County Commissioners and county department directors are scheduled to attend.
