Driver Who Fled from Police Identified


WALDORF, Md. (April 17, 2015)—Maryland State Police have identified the driver who fled from a trooper in Charles County early yesterday morning which lead to his fatal crash.

The male driver is identified as Delonte Lee, 26, of Fort Washington, Maryland. He was pronounced dead at the scene. A search of the vehicle was conducted. No illegal contraband was located. Lee was found to have an outstanding warrant for failing to appear for a driving without a license. His driving privileges are currently suspended.

Around 1:00 a.m. Thursday morning, Lee refused to stop the 2005 Toyota Scion he was driving when a trooper attempted a traffic stop in the area of Route 301 and Acton Lane in Charles County. Lee proceeded through a steady red signal turning onto Acton Lane, continuing westbound and accelerating to elude the trooper. After loosing sight of the Scion, the trooper proceeded on Acton Lane where he located the vehicle on the right roadside where it struck a utility pole causing the vehicle to overturn.

Investigators from the State Police Crash Team responded to the scene to conduct a detailed investigation. They were assisted by troopers from the La Plata Barrack, crime scene technicians and investigators from the Southern Maryland Criminal Enforcement Division.

Due to the severity of the crash, the destruction of the utility pole, and the amount of debris, troopers closed Acton Lane for several hours. Charles County Public Works personnel assisted with road closures.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is urged to call the Maryland State Police La Plata Barrack at (301) 392-1231. The Charles County States Attorney’s Office has been notified of the incident.

A detailed crash investigation is ongoing.
