St. Mary's Co. Sheriff's Reports


LEONARDTOWN, Md. (Dec. 24, 2014)—The St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office released the following incident and arrest reports.

FATAL VEHICLE ACCIDENT IN MECHANICSVILLE: On November 28 at approximately 12:35 PM, patrol units responded to the area of Point Lookout Road and Birch Manor Drive for the report of a motor vehicle accident. Investigation revealed a 2000 Jeep Cherokee, operated by Denice Dickens, 47, of Huntington, was preparing to turn left onto Birch Manor Drive from northbound Point Lookout Road. A 2011 Chevrolet Cruze, operated by Crystal Edelen, 20, of Abell, was traveling north on Point Lookout Road and struck the rear of the Jeep Cherokee. Thomas Kidwell, 82, of Mechanicsville, a passenger in the Jeep, was flown from the scene to PG Shock Trauma with serious injuries. On December 10, Kidwell died as a result of his injuries while in the hospital.

The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Collision Reconstruction Team assumed the investigation. At this time, alcohol or speed do not appear to be a contributing factor(s). Anyone who may have witnessed the collision and has not already been interviewed is asked to call DFC Brandon Foor, ID #235, at 301.475.4200 x2265.

DETECTIVES INVESTIGATING DEATH OF INFANT: On December 23 at 7:09 AM, deputies and emergency medical services personnel responded to a residence on Radford Lane for a 4-month-old male not breathing. First responders immediately began CPR and the infant was transported to MedStar St. Mary's Hospital by ambulance. At 8:00 AM, the infant was pronounced dead by emergency room doctors. Detectives from the Criminal Investigations Division responded and assumed the investigation. Additional details will be released as they are developed.

DRUG DISTRIBUTION:

James Wesley Hughes, Jr., a/k/a "Big Man," age 26.

Detectives identified a residence in Leonardtown as a distribution point for prescription medications. A search and seizure warrant was obtained and executed with the assistance of the Emergency Services Team, Narcotics Support Team members and K-9 deputies. Detectives recovered Xanax, marijuana, Suboxone, a drug ledger which documented distribution activity, more than $700.00 in cash, packaging material and cell phones. Arrested on the scene was James Wesley Hughes, Jr., a/k/a "Big Man," 26, pictured above. Suspect Hughes was charged with the drug violations and additional charges and arrests are pending a review with the State's Attorney.

12/19/2014 THEFT: A victim, who resides in the 17000 block of Point Lookout Road, reported unknown suspect(s) stole packages from her porch. CASE #67438-14.

12/20/2014 THEFT: A victim, who resides on Rogers Drive, reported unknown suspect(s) stole an air conditioning unit from his residence. CASE #67781-14.

12/20/2014 MAIL TAMPERING: A victim, who resides on Waterview Drive reported finding her mail discarded along the roadway. CASE #67803-14.

12/20/2014 BURGLARY MOTOR VEHICLE: A victim, who resides on Richard Circle, reported unknown suspect(s) entered his unlocked vehicle and stole property. CASE #67808-14.

12/21/2014 BURGLARY MOTOR VEHICLE: A victim reported unknown suspect(s) entered her vehicle and stole cash while she was shopping at various businesses. CASE #67870-14.

12/21/2014 PEEPING TOM: A victim, who resides on Preference Way reported seeing a person in dark clothing with a flashlight near her home. There may have been a second person. CASE #67974-14.

12/22/2014 VANDALISM A victim reported he was driving on Town Creek Drive when he vehicle was struck with a paintball. CASE #67860-14.

12/23/2014 BURGLARY: A victim, who resides on Colton Street in Leonardtown, reported unknown suspect(s) forced entry into his residence. However nothing appeared to have been stolen. CASE #68300-14.
