16 Arrested in St. Mary's Prostitution Roundup

LEONARDTOWN, Md. (Dec. 8, 2014)—The St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office Vice/Narcotics division today announced the results of a prostitution sting called Operation Naughty List which resulted in 16 arrests, both male and female. A 16-year-old girl from Calvert Co. was among those arrested. Police say they targeted websites that are frequently used to solicit prostitution in St. Mary's County in addition to responding to specific complaints from the public. Police declined to identify the Web sites.

Police issued a statement that argues that the social impacts of prostitution often exceed that of mere sex between consenting adults. "Beyond the quality of life issues that are associated with prostitution, other serious criminal acts—such as human trafficking, sexual assault, drug distribution and robbery—are known to have a prostitution nexus."

On one occasion, detectives answered a posting for a female offering sex for money stating she was 19-years-old. When the suspect arrived, she confirmed the sexual act she was going to perform was in exchange for money before she was taken into custody. Once she was placed under arrested, it was discovered she was a 16-year-old from Calvert County. Detectives recovered oxycodone and marijuana during the search incident to arrest. Calvert County Department of Juvenile Services was contacted. The juvenile suspect was arrested, processed and released to her parent awaiting a hearing in Juvenile Court.

"This operation confirms the value in consistently enforcing crimes related to prostitution," noted Captain Daniel D. Alioto, Commander of the Vice/Narcotics division in a prepared statement. "Hopefully a young women will receive some much needed help, employees who have sensitive positions that are easily compromised will realize how vulnerable they become, and that each of the offenders expose themselves to safety and health risk."
