Fatal Pedestrian Accident in Leonardtown


LEONARDTOWN, Md. (Nov. 17, 2014)—The St. Mary's Co. Sheriff's Office is reporting the death of a pedestrian in Leonardtown. Brian Todd Cooper, age 51, of Mechanicsville, was struck by a car at Point Lookout Road and Maypole Road on Saturday around 5:24 pm.

Police investigators determined that Cooper was illegally in the roadway while crossing the northbound lanes of Point Lookout Road. Cooper entered the path of a 2014 Ford Taurus, operated by Richard L. Buckler, 69, of Leonardtown, and was struck by the vehicle.

Cooper suffered life threatening injuries and was transported to MedStar St. Mary's Hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Police say that alcohol appears to have been a factor on the part of the pedestrian.

The St. Mary's County Collision Reconstruction Team conducted the investigation.
