SMCM, Chesapeake Orchestra Continue River Concert Series Partnership

College to Host March 15th Gala Benefiting Summer 2014 Concert Series

ST. MARY’S CITY, Md. (March 5, 2014)—St. Mary’s College of Maryland and the Chesapeake Orchestra are pleased to present the 16th annual River Concert Series. The Series, under the musical direction of Professor Jeffrey Silberschlag, will continue this summer each Friday from June 20 through July 25, 2014, starting at 7 p.m., on the St. Mary’s College Townhouse Green. Concerts are free and open to the public.

The college and the orchestra have recently signed a new 3-year agreement continuing their partnership. Similar to the 2013 series, the agreement outlines the division of responsibilities between the college and the orchestra.

“The River Concert Series has become a mainstay of the Southern Maryland community, bringing extraordinary musical talent to our own backyard,” said St. Mary’s College Interim President Ian Newbould. “We are pleased to continue our partnership with the Chesapeake Orchestra in bringing this wonderful tradition of enriching, family-friendly concerts to the community and our students. We look forward to this summer’s program and welcoming our friends and neighbors to our campus.”

Bob Prine, president of the Chesapeake Orchestra board offered these thoughts: "The Chesapeake Orchestra is glad to be able join with the college to continue a tradition that has become such an integral part of summer in Southern Maryland—gathering with friends, neighbors and colleagues to listen to great classical music and Jazz, performed by a wonderful combination of faculty, students and professional musicians, in a welcoming environment. We would also like to thank our many supporters from the business community and the general public whose generosity makes it all possible.”

"Virginia Stein, steering committee co-chair of the Arts Alliance of St. Mary’s College, said, “I am excited that the college and the Chesapeake Orchestra have entered into an agreement to present the River Concert Series not only for the 2014 season, but through 2015 and 2016. I know, too, that the broader St. Mary's community will be delighted that these programs of superior music, in a beautiful and relaxed setting, will continue.” The Arts Alliance promotes and supports the college’s cultural and arts-related activities and programs, including the River Concert Series.

On Saturday, March 15, the college invites the public to attend the 13th annual River Concert Series Gala. Participants will enjoy dinner and live music performed by the Chesapeake Orchestra "Jazz Combo." This event will be held, starting at 6 p.m., in the J. Frank Raley Great Room, Campus Center. Proceeds benefit the 2014 River Concert Series. Tickets are $120 per person, $800 for table of 8, or $1000 for a table of 10.
