CSM Robotics Team Finalists in REC Foundation Competition
Talons Create Videos to Raise Awareness of STEM Education
The College of Southern Maryland's Robotics Team, the Talons, were named finalists in the Robotics Education and Competition Foundation (RECF) 2014 Online Challenge.
To raise awareness of their team and upcoming competitions, the Talons created two videos. The video, "Autonomous Selector Switch," was part of a challenge to teach a new robotics team something about robotics engineering that the Talons team learned from experience. Talons who participated in the making of the video are David Farrell of Newburg, Jonathan Frank of Indian Head, John Hamel of Mechanicsville and Emily Subocz of Waldorf.
The video, "An Electrifying Evening with the Arts & Sciences" was created with the help of CSM Digital Media Production student Lacy Davis, of Accokeek, and showed how the team is involved in community outreach. Both videos are posted on the VEX Robotics Competition's website and can be viewed at http://forum.robotevents.com/design/challenge/detail/219.
Online Challenge winners will be announced March 5.
The Talons will be competing at the World Championship VEX U Robotics Challenge in Anaheim, Calif., on April 23 through April 26.

St. Charles Running Festival Supports Womens Lacrosse
College Raises Funds to Field Team in Spring 2015
St. Charles Companies presented $1,500 in proceeds from the 2013 St. Charles Running Festival to support establishing a womens lacrosse team at the College of Southern Maryland. Due to outstanding support from community partners and the CSM Foundation, the college has been able to launch lacrosse at the NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association) collegiate level in Southern Maryland, with a mens team set for its season home opener March 9. The CSM Foundation is seeking to raise $25,000 to launch the womens team in spring 2015. St. Charles Companies offered the proceeds from the 2013 running festival, which was also sponsored by Lennar and Chick-fil-A, as a matching donation to support the colleges student athletes during #GivingTuesday in December.
