Historic Preservation Awards Event Postponed to Feb. 22

Due to the recent snow, the Charles County Historic Preservation Commission postponed the Preservation Reception and Awards Ceremony originally scheduled for Feb. 15. The event will be held Saturday, Feb. 22 from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. at the Port Tobacco Courthouse (Chapel Point Rd., Port Tobacco). A reception at the recently acquired Stagg Hall will follow the awards ceremony.

The winner(s) of the Charles County Preservation Award for 2014 will be announced at this time. The Historic Preservation Award is presented annually to an eligible individual, business, organization, or project that deserves recognition for outstanding achievements in historic preservation. Awards are presented in two categories: Preservation Projects and Preservation Service.

Dr. Julie M. Schablitsky, chief archaeologist at the Maryland State Highway Administration and adjunct professor at the University of Maryland, will be the guest speaker for this event. She will share her work in recent years near the historic Village of Benedict.

Commissioner Robinson’s February Town Hall Meeting Postponed

Commissioner Ken Robinson (District 1) “Coffee with the Commissioner” event scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 15 was postponed until Saturday, March 1, 11 a.m., at Starbucks (6675 Crain Highway, La Plata).

Commissioner Robinson will be attending a public forum sponsored by the South Hampton Homeowners Association, Inc. at the Bryans Road Public Library (3225 Ruth B Swann Dr., Indian Head). The forum is scheduled for 10 a.m., and is open to the public.

Spring Sports Leagues Announced

The Charles County Department of Public Works will hold registration for spring sports leagues from Monday, Feb. 24 through Friday, March 14.

Adult Softball – League play will start the week of April 23 at Laurel Springs Park and White Plains Regional Park. The franchise fee is $600-650 per team.

Adult Co-Ed Kickball – League play will take place on Tuesday nights at White Plains Regional Park. The franchise fee is $450 per team.

Men's Soccer – League play will take place Monday nights at White Plains Regional Park. Games will be 11 vs. 11 format on a regulation-size soccer field. The franchise fee is $550 per team.

Men’s “Over-35” Soccer – League play is at Laurel Springs Park on Wednesday nights. Games will be 7 vs. 7 format on an intermediate-size soccer field. The franchise fee is $450 per team.

Women's Soccer – League play will take place Sundays at Laurel Springs Park. Games will be 7 vs. 7 format on an intermediate-size soccer field. The franchise fee is $450 per team.

Commissioners Fund Scholarships to Benefit Charles County Students

The Charles County Commissioners are pleased to offer two scholarships to help Charles County students with higher education expenses.

The Charles County Teacher Education Assistance Grant is a $1,000 renewable scholarship administered by the Charles County Scholarship Fund, Inc. Visit http://www.ccboe.com/community/students/collegeinfo.php to apply. The deadline is Monday, March 3 to apply for Charles County Commissioner-funded scholarship for the fall 2014 school year.

The Charles County Commissioners Nursing/Allied Health Scholarship, administered by the College of Southern Maryland (CSM), is awarded to Charles County residents enrolled in the clinical portion of the nursing or specific allied health programs at CSM. Students may apply for scholarships from Friday, Jan. 31 through Friday, May 16 and are encouraged to apply early for best consideration.
