CALLAWAY, Md.—Local governmental entities have announced schedule changes and closings in observance of the Veteran's Day holiday which will be officially celebrated on Monday, November 11. The town of Leonardtown will also hold a parade on Monday beginning at 10:00 a.m.
Calvert County Government
Calvert County Government offices will be closed on Monday, Nov. 11.
-- The three county senior centers will be closed on Veterans Day. Meals on Wheels will be delivered.
-- All county solid waste facilities, including the Appeal Landfill and county convenience centers, will be open for normal business hours.
-- County public transportation will not be available Nov. 11.
-- Calvert Library locations will be closed.
-- County parks, the Edward T. Hall Aquatic Center and the Calvert Marine Museum will be open normal hours, as well as the Northeast Community Center. Mount Hope and Southern community centers and North Beach Recreational Center will be closed.
Charles County Public Schools
Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) administrative offices and schools are closed Monday, Nov 11, for Veterans Day.
Henry E. Lackey and North Point high schools indoor pools will follow a modified schedule. The indoor pools are open 1-9 p.m. on Nov. 11.
Charles County Government
The following offices will be closed for normal business hours on Monday, Nov. 11:
-- All Charles County Government offices and the Tri-County Animal Shelter in Hughesville
-- All Senior Centers
-- The Nanjemoy Community Center
-- School based community centers
-- VanGO Brandywine Connector
The following offices will be open normal hours:
-- The Crain Memorial Welcome Center located at 12480 Crain Highway in Newburg
-- The Charles County Landfill and Recycling Center off Billingsley Road in Waldorf, and the Pisgah Recycling Center on Route 425 in Pisgah
-- Curbside recycling collection service will not be affected
-- Charles County Parks
-- Elite Gymnastics and Recreation Center and Port Tobacco Recreation Center
The following operating schedules will be modified as follows:
-- Lackey and North Point High indoor pools (1 p.m. - 9 p.m.)
-- VanGOLast departures from the Waldorf transfer point will be at 5:30 p.m. on the 301 Connector, Business A, Business B, and Charlotte Hall routes. Last departures from the Waldorf transfer point will be at 6 p.m. on the Berry Road, Indian Head, Pinefield, St. Charles A, St. Charles B, and St. Charles C routes. Last departures from the La Plata transfer point will be at 5:30 p.m. on the 301 Connector, Bryans Road, and Nanjemoy routes. Last departures from the La Plata transfer point for Newburg will be at 4:30 p.m., and for La Plata will be at 6 p.m.
St. Mary's County Government
All St. Mary's County Government Offices will be closed Monday, November 11, 2013, in observance of Veteran's Day. County Government offices will re-open Tuesday, November 12.
The St. Andrews Landfill, Solid Waste/Recycling Program and six convenience centers will be open for normal operating hours and St. Mary's Transit System (STS) will run its regular schedule on Monday, November 11.
All St. Mary's County Libraries and Department of Aging and Human Services Senior Activity Centers will be closed Monday, November 11. There will also be no Meals on Wheels deliveries.
Veterans Day Parade in Leonardtown
On Monday, November 11 at 10:00 a.m. the St. Marys Board of County Commissioners, the Commissioners of Leonardtown, and parade organizers invite the public to come out and salute Americas Veterans at the Annual Veterans Day Parade in Leonardtown! The parade steps off from St. Marys Ryken High School, proceeds through Town Square and is immediately followed by a Memorial Ceremony, including a special tribute to Captain Walter Francis Duke, local WWII hero for whom the new elementary school in Leonardtown is being named.
The College of Southern Maryland Leonardtown Campus will be open for classes on Veterans Day. Therefore, spectators are asked to leave the parking lot open for CSM students, and park at the Governmental Center instead. A complimentary, round-trip, handicap-accessible shuttle into Town will still be available. Spectators should park in the areas near the Carter Office Building, 23115 Leonard Hall Drive and board the shuttle at the shuttle stop near the flagpoles between the Carter Office Building and the Potomac Building.

Motor Vehicle Administration
The Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) will close its full-service and express offices on Monday, November 11, in observance of Veterans Day. All Vehicle Emissions Inspection Program (VEIP) stations will also be closed. Offices will reopen for business Tuesday, November 12.
Customers are advised that the days before and after a holiday are especially busy, and they should check out wait times on the MVA website. For convenience and to save time, MVA also encourages customers to complete their MVA transaction online. Online registration renewals and many other time saving alternative service options are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by logging on to the MVA website at

MVA also wants to remind Veterans that MVA offers a Veteran designation printed on the drivers license or identification (ID) card for qualifying veterans. The designation will place a W code on the front of the license or ID with the word veteran on the back indicating that you are a United States Veteran. Learn more at
