Commissioners to Hold Public Hearing on 2013 Draft Comprehensive Plan
On Tuesday, Oct. 29, the Charles County Board of Commissioners will hold a public hearing for input on the draft 2013 Charles County Comprehensive Plan. The hearing will be held at the County Government Building in the Commissioners Meeting Room (200 Baltimore Street, La Plata) at 7 p.m. Speaker sign-in will begin at 5:30 p.m. and conclude at the commencement of the hearing. In the event that the notified meeting is canceled due to inclement weather or acts of nature beyond the control of the County, all items scheduled to be discussed or heard at the meeting shall be rescheduled.
The Comprehensive Plan directs future development of Charles County. This plan must be updated at least once every 10 years per the Land Use Article of the Annotated Code of Maryland. Citizens who wish to make oral or written comments are encouraged to attend. Individuals or representatives of groups wishing to speak must sign in. Each speaker will be allotted three minutes. Individuals representing organizations will have five minutes. The County Commissioners reserve the right to extend the time frame allotted for the hearing.

Free Rabies Clinic Offered on Nov. 10
Protect the ones you love! Maryland law requires all dogs, cats, and ferrets be vaccinated for rabies. Bring your pet to a free rabies clinic on Sunday, Nov. 10, from 1 p.m. - 3 p.m. at Ironsides Volunteer Rescue Squad located at 6120 Port Tobacco Road, Ironsides.
The clinic is sponsored by the volunteers of the Charles County Animal Response Team, Charles County Animal Control, and the Charles County Department of Health.
Dog and Cat licenses will also be available for purchase. The fee for a pet license is $5 if your animal is altered; $25 is your animal is not altered. All dogs must be leashed. All cats and ferrets must be contained in a carrier.

County Recycling Centers Now Accepting Used Cooking Oil
Charles County residents can now help keep cooking oil and grease out of the county's sewer system and landfill. The Department of Public Works invites residents to recycle residential amounts of used cooking oil at any one of the county's recycling centers.
Acceptable cooking oil includes deep fryer oil and oil used to prepare or cook food on a grill, griddle, frying pan, fryer, or wok. The used cooking oil collection containers are in a separate location from the used motor oil collection containers; please see a recycling center attendant for assistance. This program is for residents only! It does not include any material from commercial grease traps or commercial quantities of cooking oil.
The drop-off locations are:
-- Breeze Farm Recycling Center (15950 Cobb Island Road, Cobb Island): Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesday 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
-- Charles County Landfill (12305 Billingsley Road, Waldorf): Monday to Saturday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.)
-- Gilbert Run Park Recycling Center (13140 Charles Street, Charlotte Hall): Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Wednesday 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
-- Pisgah Recycling Center (4830 Pisgah Park Place, Pisgah): Monday to Saturday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Commissioners Recognize Honorees at Morgan State University Alumni Event
The Charles County Commissioners presented certificates of recognition to distinguished honorees at the Morgan State University Southern Maryland Alumni Chapter eighth annual Blue and Orange Scholarship Dinner Dance and Awards Program on Saturday, Sept. 14 at the Waldorf Jaycees Community Center (3090 Crain Highway, Waldorf). Proceeds provided scholarships for deserving students who will attend Morgan State University and allowed the chapter to continue to engage in numerous community service projects.
In attendance were: Delegate James Proctor, Jr., honoree; Ms. Doris Hall, honoree; Mr. Thomas Datcher, Morgan State University Southern Maryland Alumni Chapter Alumnus of the Year; Judge Sheila Tillerson Adams, honoree; and Ms. Denise Barnes, President of the Morgan State University Southern Maryland Alumni Chapter; Commissioner Debra M. Davis, Esq. (District 2); Commissioner Vice President Reuben B.
