CALVERT COUNTY, Md. (August 28, 2013)—Deputy State Fire Marshals have charged Jose Nectali Mejia Pineda, age 24, for his involvement with intentionally burning his 2009 Acura TL on January 22, 2013.
The vehicle was parked in the cul de sac of Cedarwood Lane in Dunkirk, Calvert County and subsequently set on fire with the use of a liquid accelerant at approximately 2:30 a.m. Investigators determined that both Pineda and his girlfriend, Nancy Urrutia, age 21, were responsible for setting the car on fire.
Urrutia was charged with the incident in February. Pineda fled to Honduras and recently returned to the United States on August 27, 2013, to Dulles International Airport. U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers detained Pineda on an arrest warrant upon his arrival and transported him to the Loudon County Detention Center in Leesburg, Virginia.
Pineda waived extradition and Deputy State Fire Marshals transported him to the Calvert County Detention Center without incident. Pineda was charged with 2nd Degree Arson and Burning with Intent to Defraud. He is awaiting a bond review before a Calvert County District Court Commissioner. A preliminary trial has been scheduled for September 6, 2013. If convicted of the charges, Pineda faces penalties of up to 25 years imprisonment and/or $35,000 in fines.
