English, Criminal Justice Courses Taught by Instructors with Military Service
LA PLATA, Md.—This fall, the College of Southern Maryland is offering classes solely for veteranstaught by faculty members who are veterans.
CSM has a reputation as a veterans supportive college and is always exploring opportunities to assist veterans who want to further their education, said CSM Professor William Ed Moroney, who initiated the veteran-only classes after learning of other colleges having similar programs with good results.
Moroney said the classes are open to veterans no matter how long ago they served. I like the idea of recently discharged veterans and veterans retiring after 20 or more years of service attending class together, although our target group is recently discharged veterans.
The classes are ENG-1010: Composition and Rhetoric at the La Plata Campus and CJS-1015: Introduction to Criminal Justice at the Waldorf Center for Higher Education. The fall semester begins Sept. 3. Special permission is needed to register and students will need to contact a CSM advisor to register for these classes.
Veterans will follow the same syllabus as students in other ENG-1010 and CJS-1015 classes except that they will be in a class with peersfellow students and veteran instructors who comprehend their service and experiences and can aid them in their assimilation into the college environment, said Moroney.
These classes give veterans an opportunity to interact with CSMs veteran support system and access various veteran faculty personalities, allowing them to tap into knowledge of the many programs available to them from within the community and within the state and Federal governments, Moroney said.
