The Charles County Commissioners are seeking county residents to fill vacancies on the following boards, committees, and commissions:

There are three vacancies on the nine member Board of Social Services; three vacancies are for citizen members. The Board of Social Services deals with policies, programs, and problems of the local Department of Social Services and Public Assistance administration. The Board meets monthly. Members serve four year terms.
There are three vacancies on the seven member Monument Commission. One vacancy is for a member with a background in history, one is for a citizen member and one is for a military/veteran member. This Commission will recommend locations for monuments; prepare guidelines, criteria and a plan for implementation of monument projects. The Commission will meet as necessary. Members will serve four year terms.
There is one vacancy on the Newly Established Neighborhood Traffic Calming Task Force for a member of a resident in a rural neighborhood. This task force will assist the Department of Planning & Growth Management in developing a Neighborhood Traffic Calming Program in Charles County. The task force will research the subject as well as provide suggestions and feedback for use in drafting neighborhood traffic calming regulations. Charge is complete when traffic calming regulations have been proposed and acted upon by the Board of County Commissioners
The County Commissioners are seeking persons wishing to be nominated to the Governor for consideration as a member on the Charles County Property Tax Assessment Appeal Board. The Board hears appeals from Charles County property owners who disagree with the values assessed by the State Department of Assessments and Taxation, and appeals concerning local tax credits, local taxes, and other local tax matters. The Board meets approximately one to two times per month on Wednesdays. Terms are five years. There are four vacancies on the Newly Established School Adequate Public Facilities Program and Funding Review Committee. There are two vacancies for realtor members and two vacancies for educators. This committee shall evaluate the School Adequate Public Facilities Program and Fundingpolicy to determine if it is achieving the stated goals. The committee will develop solutions for the timing of providing adequate school facilities to match the planned growth in the County. This committee will work with staff to make recommendations on issues related to school redistricting, school capacity allocation, and the timing and methods of school funding and construction. Meetings will be every other Wednesday at 6 p.m. Members will serve one year term.

Charles County Fourth of July Celebration
The Charles County Board of Commissioners is pleased to announce the "Celebrate Charles: A Fun Filled Fourth" on Thursday, July 4, from 4:30 - 9:30 p.m. at Regency Furniture Stadium (11765 St. Linus Drive, Waldorf). The general public is invited to attend this family-friendly event.
Local businesses, artisans and food establishments will be showcased in the "Best of Charles County" and kids of all ages can enjoy amusements in the Celebrate Charles Family Fun Zone. Guests will enjoy live music performed by John Luskey and Three Sixty. A fireworks display will top off the evening at 9:30 p.m. Admission is free. There are fees for food and product purchases. Family Fun Zone wristbands are $5.
Guests will also be able to enjoy the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs baseball game against the Camden Riversharks. Game time is 6:35 p.m. and tickets can be purchased by calling 301-638-9788 or visiting www.somdbluecrabs.com. Guests who purchase a ticket to the game will receive a complimentary wristband for the Celebrate Charles Family Fun Zone.

Sign up for Extreme Fun at the Summer Skateboard Camp
Extreme fun is the name of the game at the 360 Action Skateboard Camp! This camp is offered this summer during the week of July 22 - 26 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Charles County Skate Park. The skate park has ramps and rails that will challenge athletes of all skill levels. Sign up today while spaces are still available.
Camp participants will receive group and individual training on safe riding, tack turns, kick turns, ollies, grinding, getting air, bowl drop-ins and much more, under the supervision of professional coaches from American Inline Skating . All campers receive an official camp T-shirt and stickers.
The camp is open to youth between the ages of 6 and 14 years old. The camp fee is $125, and the registration deadline is July 1 (early registration is recommended).

Charles County Earns National Budget Award for 17th Consecutive Year
On Tuesday, May 21, the Charles County Commissioners recognized the Department of Fiscal and Administrative Services for their 17th consecutive year earning a national budget award. The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) selected Charles County, Md., to receive the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for the Fiscal Year 2012 budget.
The award represents a significant achievement for Charles County. It reflects the commitment of the governing body and staff to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting. In order to receive the budget award, Charles County Government had to satisfy nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation.
