LA PLATA, Md. (April 18, 2013)—The Charles County Sheriff's Office today released the following incident and arrest reports.
DETECTIVES IDENTIFY ROBBERY SUSPECT AND MAKE ARREST: On April 15 at 9:34 a.m., officers responded to the 3200 block of Crain Highway in Waldorf for the report of a robbery. Investigation showed the victim, an 80-year-old woman, was leaving a grocery store when a male suspect approached and pulled her purse away from her hands. The woman struggled but the suspect broke the purse away and fled to a white Chrysler 300. Officer Kimble located the vehicle on Crain Highway and initiated a traffic stop but the suspect refused to pull over. A pursuit followed but was immediately canceled after the pursuing officer noticed a small boy standing up, unrestrained in the backseat of the suspect's vehicle. Detectives quickly identified the suspect as Larry Jamal Fortune, 22, of Fairfax, Virginia, and learned the child in the car was his 2-year-old son. Detectives later found the suspect’s car in Washington, D.C. and the child was found safe in the custody of a relative. Investigators from the CCSO Criminal Investigations Division obtained an arrest warrant and Fortune was taken into custody on April 16. He was charged with robbery, assault, theft, endangering a child, and multiple traffic violations. Det. A. Celia made the arrest.
TEENS CHARGED WITH ROBBERY AND ASSAULT: On April 13 at 11 p.m., the victim and a friend were leaving the carnival at St. Charles Town Center when they observed a group of people leaning against their car. When the victim asked the suspects to move, the suspects refused and words were exchanged. The argument escalated and a physical altercation ensued. During the assault, the suspects stole the victim's cell phone and keys and then fled. Patrol officers responded, obtained a lookout and, based on further investigation, were able to identify one of the suspects. Further investigation between the officers and detectives assigned to the Criminal Investigations Division led to the identity of the other suspects. On April 18, Drew Dorsey, 17, of Waldorf, and a 14-year-old female were arrested and charged with robbery, assault and theft. Dorsey was charged as an adult. Detectives have identified a third suspect and an arrest warrant is imminent. Officer R. Johnson is investigating.
BURGLARY: On April 17 at 9:51 a.m., a homeowner had just returned to her residence in the 10400 block of Sugarberry Street in Waldorf when she noticed the blinds to her den were open. As she entered her front door, she observed papers thrown about the house. She also observed the door in the basement, which is normally locked, opened and damaged. She left and called police. Officers checked the house and determined the suspects gained entry by breaking out a window. They had to flee when the homeowner arrived home so they broke out of the house by kicking out the back door which had a deadbolt lock. The suspects left behind a black book bag in which they had put an Xbox belonging to the victim. Officers canvassed the neighborhood and located a person who observed two juvenile males riding bicycles near the victim's house just prior to the burglary. One of the males had a black book bag. A bicycle was also recovered at the rear of the victim's house. Officer G. Owen is investigating.
ALERT NEIGHBOR REPORTS BURGLARY IN PROGRESS/CCSO APPREHENDS SUSPECTS: On April 17 at 8:20 a.m., officers were called to the 2200 block of Wakefield Circle in Waldorf after a neighbor called to report a group of males breaking into a home that was in the process of foreclosure. Officers arrived and established a perimeter. Four males and a juvenile were apprehended. Investigation showed the suspects forced entry into the house by breaking in the back door; they were in the process of stealing items that had been left behind. Trevon Rydell Douglas, 18; Travis Jermaine Dorsey, 18; Terrence Lamont Ford, 18; Devonte Lynel Dorsey, 18; and a 15-year-old male, all of Waldorf, were charged with burglary. POI A. THEFTS FROM MOTOR VEHICLES: On April 15 between 5 p.m. - 7 p.m., unknown suspect(s) broke into two cars outside a gym in the 3300 block of Plaza Way. In both cases, the victims' left items inside their car in plain sight. The owner of one car said she left her make-up bag, which resembled a purse, inside the car. Once the suspect(s) gained entry, nothing was stolen. The owner of the second car left her purse inside her vehicle on the passenger-side floor board. The suspect(s) broke out a window, stole the purse and later used the victim's credit cards to make purchases. Detectives are pursuing leads. The sheriff's office is reminding citizens to remove valuables from their car when leaving it unattended. Thieves like to target parking lots of gyms and other locations where people tend to leave valuables inside their cars because owners often think they won't be gone long enough for someone to break in or it's sometimes inconvenient to secure them. TEEN CHARGED WITH STRONG-ARM ROBBERY: On April 15 at 8:40 p.m., a lone male suspect approached a female in the rear parking lot of Thomas Stone High School where she was waiting to be picked up after a sporting practice. The suspect demanded her cell phone and when the girl refused, the suspect assaulted her, stole the phone and fled. Officers were able to quickly identify the suspect as a student at the school. He was located at his house and arrested. Tyrone Donta Thomas, 18, of Waldorf, was charged with robbery, assault and theft. He was remanded to the Charles County Department of Corrections with a $7,500 bond. Officer C. Gilroy made the arrest.
