County's 9-1-1 Service is Reliable Public Link during Massive Fire

System remained fully operational, despite unusually heavy load

On Tuesday, April 2 at approximately 3:23 p.m., the Dept. of Emergency Services 9-1-1 Communications Division dispatched units to the Charles County Fairgrounds (8440 Fairgrounds Road, La Plata). The massive structure and brush fires required more than 170 firefighters from Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia. Throughout this extraordinary incident, the county's 9-1-1 system was a reliable and stable link for the public to request emergency assistance.

The fire at the fairgrounds, compounded by an unusually high number of emergency situations occurring in other areas of the county, resulted in an extremely heavy call volume at the 9-1-1 Communications Center yesterday. The 9-1-1 system remained fully operational at all times.

The 911 Fire/EMS Communications' function is to aid the general public by providing access to emergency services in Charles County, and to neighboring jurisdictions as necessary, through facilitating the response of the closest appropriate public safety resource in order to protect life, limb and property.

Citizens are reminded to call 9-1-1 in the event of an emergency. For non-emergencies, contact the local police or fire department using a non-emergency telephone number.
