SMCM Earns Highest Honor for Community Service Work

ST. MARY’S CITY, Md.—St. Mary’s College of Maryland has been named to the 2013 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. This designation is the highest honor a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning, and civic engagement. This is the college’s second time making the list, the first in 2011.

“St. Mary’s College has a long history of service-learning and believes strongly in preparing our graduates to be active leaders and participants in their current and future communities," said President Joseph Urgo. “We’re honored to receive this prestigious award – and owe much of it to the students themselves. They are the energy driving our commitment and they are the ones who make it all happen.”

“Congratulations to St. Mary’s College of Maryland, its faculty and students for its commitment to service, both in and out of the classroom,” said Wendy Spencer, CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service. “Through its work, institutions of higher education are helping improve their local communities and create a new generation of leaders by challenging students to go beyond the traditional college experience and solve local challenges.”

Since 2006, the Community Service Honor Roll has recognized institutions of higher education that support exemplary community service programs and raise the visibility of best practices in campus-community partnerships. It is overseen by the Corporation for National and Community Service in collaboration with the U.S. Departments of Education and Housing and Urban Development, as well as the American Council on Education and Campus Compact.

Honorees are chosen based on a series of selection factors, including the scope and innovation of service projects, the extent to which service-learning is embedded into the curriculum, and the school’s commitment to long-term campus-community partnerships.
