Acting Charles Co. Health Officer Retires

LA PLATA, Md.—The Charles County Commissioners and the Charles County Department of Health announced the retirement of Faye Reed, Acting Health Officer for Charles County. Reed has been a vital asset to the health of Charles County residents for more than 38 years.

Reed served in a public health capacity throughout her career. She began as a nurse at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Washington D.C., following her 1971 graduation from the University of Maryland's School of Nursing. From 1972 to 1974, she worked for the Prince George's County Health Department in various nursing capacities.

Reed joined the Charles County Department of Health in 1974 as a nurse for the maternity and community health programs. She received her master's degree in nursing in 1992, and worked in the Nursing and Community Health Division of the health department until her appointment as deputy health officer in 1996. As deputy health officer, Reed was responsible for overseeing the day-to-day activities of the health department. Under her guidance, many of the programs now in place were initiated, following the move to the department's present location.

Commissioner President Candice Quinn Kelly said, "Mrs. Reed 's service as the acting health officer for the Charles County Department of Health has been a benefit to the county. Her knowledge and expertise will be missed."
