SMCM Study Abroad Program Recognized Among Top in Nation

ST. MARY’S CITY, Md.—St. Mary’s College of Maryland has been recognized by the Institute of International Education as one of the nation’s top higher education institutions for international engagement.

In the Institute of International Education’s latest Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange—released the beginning of International Education Week (Nov. 12-16)—among bachelor degree granting institutions, St. Mary’s College ranks top 40 in the nation for total number of students sent abroad and among the top 20 in the nation for overall study abroad participation rate.

“St. Mary's College is deeply committed to supporting its students in developing knowledge, skills, and attitudes that sharpen global awareness and engagement,” said Joseph R. Urgo, president of St. Mary’s College. “It is gratifying to see our efforts reflected in the Institute of International Education’s Open Doors Report.”

“Study abroad fosters the opportunity to apply ideas and knowledge outside the classroom,” said Mandy Reinig, director of international education. “We carry the honors college traditions abroad by offering academic courses with hand-selected, international faculty at our own or partner residential sites. Our students return home with new perspectives and skill sets, propelling them to be globally conscious leaders of tomorrow.”

The Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange is published annually by the Institute of International Education, the leading not-for-profit educational and cultural exchange organization in the United States, with support from the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. The 2012 report data for U.S. students studying abroad reflect the 2010-11 academic year.
