SMCM's Landscape Among Best Maintained College Landscapes in U.S.

ST. MARY’S CITY, Md. (November 5, 2012)—The Professional Grounds Management Society (PGMS) has recently announced St. Mary’s College of Maryland winner of its 2012 Grand Award. The award distinction is the highest in PGMS’ Green Star Professional Grounds Management Awards program.

The award recognizes St. Mary’s College as having one of the country’s best maintained landscapes in the colleges and universities category, placing the college among overall past PGMS award winners such as The Disneyland Resort, Smithsonian Gardens, the National Zoo, and Penn State University.

“As an honors college, St. Mary’s College of Maryland is dedicated to exemplifying an honors commitment in all that it does, be it in the classroom or in its grounds practices,” said President Joseph R. Urgo. “We’ve inherited a magnificent landscape here in beautiful St. Mary’s City and our grounds crew works tirelessly to maintain it. We’re thrilled to receive this award and are pleased have our grounds practices be a model for other institutions.”

St. Mary’s College congratulated Kevin Mercer, superintendent of grounds, Steve Gregory, assistant superintendent, and Cheryl Krumke, assistant supervisor of grounds. Further congratulations go to groundskeepers Justin Mattingly; Eric Reed; Sylvester Parren; Ed Copper; Kevin Duffy; Chris McKay; Earl Barber; and Jeff Gerek.

The awards grand, honor, and merit are offered in 15 categories, including private, public commercial and industrial landscapes. Awards were presented during the 2012 PGMS School of Grounds Management held in conjunction with the GIE+EXPO in Louisville, Ky this past Oct.
