CALVERT COUNTY, Md. (October 9, 2012) Deputy State Fire Marshals have concluded an investigation involving the arson of a trash can and the exterior rear deck attached to a single family home located at 3813 10th Street in Chesapeake Beach.
The first of two incidents originally occurred on September 20. At approximately 11:42 p.m., a trash can outside the home was found burning by the occupant, Lawrence Kosmas, and quickly extinguished after arrival of the North Beach Volunteer Fire Department. At approximately 5:49 a.m., Mr. Kosmas was alerted to a second fire when smoke began to enter his home. He discovered flames on the rear deck and immediately notified 911. The one alarm fire was brought under control by approximately fourteen firefighters from the North Beach Volunteer Fire Department. Damage estimates from the fires is $10,000.
The investigation revealed that Nicholas D. Jameson, age 18, and a seventeen year-old male accomplice were responsible for intentionally igniting both fires and fleeing the scene. Both suspects were charged with Arson 1st Degree and Arson to a Trash Container. Jameson was transported to the Calvert County Detention Center and the other juvenile was placed under house arrest by the Department of Juvenile Services.
If convicted of the charges, both suspects face penalties of up to 30 years and one month imprisonment and/or $50,500 in fines.
