LA PLATA, Md.—The College of Southern Maryland has named Dr. Ricky C. Godbolt as director of the Center for Trades and Energy Training (CTET). Godbolt will represent CTET to the community, direct day-to-day operations of the center, develop courses and services that prepare students for the workforce, and oversee instructors and staff. An early initiative, according to Godbolt, is to establish CSM as a site to administer the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners entry level exam. He is also working to present scholarship options for students looking to pursue training in the trades, such as membership in the National Technical Honor Society.

“I am looking forward to directing the Center for Trades and Energy Training in developing the workforce to meet a critical labor shortage that is anticipated in this region over the next 10 years. With the impending retirements of baby-boomers, a critical shortage of craft workers and the expansion of green jobs, CSM is poised to meet the needs of our community through workforce solutions like CTET,” said Godbolt.

“With Ricky’s background and experience, our trades and energy training programs are in good hands. We look forward to continued growth of these programs and expansion of our partnerships with businesses in these industries throughout the region, “said CSM Vice President of Continuing Education and Workforce Development Dr. Daniel Mosser.

From 2006 to 2011, Godbolt served as program director for the Construction and Energy Institute at Prince George’s Community College where he prepared students for careers in the construction and energy industries. As a master trainer, he trained and certified 19 National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) instructors and supervised skilled trade adjunct faculty members for electrical/electronics; building maintenance engineer; heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVAC/R); locksmithing/security technology; automotive; and stationary engineering/boiler operations. He served as the subject matter expert and point of contact for the technical studies associate’s degree program.

Godbolt earned a doctorate degree in educational leadership and a master’s degree in education from University of Phoenix, and a bachelor’s degree in social psychology from Park University in Parkville, Mo. He is certified as a NCCER master trainer.

Serving 21 years in the U.S. Army, Godbolt held military occupational specialties in track vehicle mechanic, track vehicle repairer, interior electrician, construction supervisor, marine engineering officer and marine deck officer. He was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, four Army commendation medals, nine Army achievement medals, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korea Defense Service Medal, Army sea duty ribbon and two humanitarian service medals in addition to numerous other awards and recognitions. Godbolt served in the 2/58th Mechanized Infantry Battalion, Ft. Hood, Texas; 864th Engineer Battalion (Heavy Combat), Presidio of San Francisco; 19th Engineer Battalion (Combat), Ft. Knox, Ky.; U.S. Army Engineering Housing Support Center, Republic of South Korea and 73rd Transportation Company (Floating Craft), Ft. Eustis, Va., among other assignments.

CTET prepares a skilled workforce for trades and energy occupations through Career Starters programs which train students for entry level jobs in carpentry, electrical, welding, HVAC and plumbing, and which provide continued training for students in apprenticeship programs through journeyman. The Center works with local school systems, county governments, economic development offices, and industry partners to address the demands for new jobs in the economy that require new skills sets for workers.
