Charles County Sheriff's Reports

LA PLATA, Md. (August 6, 2012)—The Charles County Sheriff's Office has released the following incident and arrest reports.

FIRST-DEGREE ASSAULT ON A LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER/OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING: On Aug. 2 at 11:44 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 1100 block of Hamlin Road in Waldorf for the report of a domestic assault in progress. The female caller said her boyfriend - the father of her children - was at her house, assaulting her. She also indicated the suspect was destroying property inside and making threats that officers would have to kill him. When the first officer arrived on the scene, he was immediately confronted by the suspect who was outside and armed with two large knives - which were raised up at shoulder level. The officer drew his firearm and gave several commands for the suspect to drop the weapons. The suspect refused and instead made a furtive movement toward the officer, placing the officer in fear for his safety. At that point, the officer discharged his firearm, striking the suspect several times. The suspect, a 50-year-old male, was flown to a hospital where he was admitted with non life-threatening injuries. Forensic personnel recovered two large knives from the scene. The officer, a one-year-veteran, was placed on administrative leave in accordance with agency policy. A warrant is on file charging the suspect with first-degree assault, attempted second-degree assault, carrying a deadly weapon, reckless endangerment, and failure to obey a lawful order. The investigation is continuing.

DETECTIVES CHARGE MAN IN CONNECTION WITH FIRST-DEGREE SEX OFFENSE: Detectives assigned to the Charles County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigations Division arrested Darvin Craig Brooks, Jr., 23, of Waldorf, in connection with the sexual assault of a 24-year-old woman. The facts of the case are as follows:

On August 1 at 12:15 a.m., the victim - an employee of a gas station in Waldorf - was closing for the night when she was approached by a man whom she knew to be a frequent customer at the service station. He asked the victim for a ride to his house and she agreed. As they drove toward his residence, the suspect suddenly pulled a gun, pointed it at the victim and told her to drive to a business in the 3000 block of St. Charles Parkway. There, the suspect ordered the victim out of her car and into a wooded area where he sexually assaulted her. After the assault, the suspect fled and the victim called police.

Detectives pursued several leads and subsequently identified the suspect. An arrest warrant was obtained. On August 2, investigators served a search warrant at the suspect's residence where detectives found a handgun that may have been used in the crime. Brooks was arrested later that day after detectives and officers assigned to the CCSO Neighborhood Enforcement Team located him. Brooks was charged with first-degree sex offense, first-degree assault and use of a deadly weapon in commission of a crime. He was remanded to the Charles County Detention Center. Det. K. Klezia is investigating.
