So. Marylander Named Deputy State Fire Marshal of the Year


OCEAN CITY, Md. -– Deputy State Fire Marshal Caryn McMahon of the Southern Regional Office of the State Fire Marshal has been named the recipient of the 2011 Deputy State Fire Marshal of the Year award. State Fire Marshal William E. Barnard made the presentation during a ceremony at the Maryland State Firemen’s Association annual convention in Ocean City on June 18.

“Deputy McMahon exemplifies the overall desire and commitment our investigators embrace to ensure the safety of Maryland’s citizens”, said Barnard.

Deputy McMahon was nominated by her supervisor, Deputy Chief Duane Svites. Caryn was cited for her many achievements in 2011, such as; Response to 36 investigations resulting in 19 arrests for arson/explosive related charges, Conducting 139 fire safety code inspections in commercial establishments, Providing field training to full-time civilian Fire Safety Inspectors, Serves as an Assistant Public Information Officer for the agency, and maintains an active membership as a Chief officer at a volunteer fire and EMS company.

Deputy McMahon began her career with the Office of the State Fire Marshal as Contractual Special Assistant Deputy Fire Marshal in January 2007. She pursued a position as a Deputy State Fire Marshal and in November 2007 was hired to the position. She is a graduate of the Southern Maryland Criminal Justice Academy.
