3 Killed in Traffic Fatalities in Recent Weeks


SOUTHERN MARYLAND (May 15, 2012)—Three individuals have died on the roads of Southern Maryland in recent weeks, including a six-year-old boy who was killed this afternoon in Waldorf. An elderly Florida womain died in a single car crash on May 9 in Charles County. A Mechanicsville woman died in a single car crash in Mechanicsville on April 28; two others in the car were injured.

6-year-old boy struck by SUV in Waldorf

The Charles County Sheriff's Office is working a fatal pedestrian accident that occurred at about 2 p.m. today in which a 6-year-old boy was struck by an SUV in the 10500 block of Sugarberry Street in Waldorf. A preliminary investigation showed he stepped into the path of the vehicle; the driver remained on the scene. The investigation is on-going. More information will be released as it becomes available.

Elderly Florida woman dies in single car crash in Charles Co.

On May 9 at approximately 5:05 p.m., a Chrysler 300 M, bearing Florida registration DEE2A was traveling east bound on Maryland Route 234 just past Trinity Church Road in Charles County. The vehicle crossed over the double yellow line onto the west bound side of Rt. 234, continued across the shoulder and onto the grass. The vehicle proceeded to strike and drive over the guard rail, strike an embankment, trees and come to a rest on its drivers side facing in a western direction.

The driver, later identified as Margarita Gunva Hardesty, 71, of Fort Pierce, Florida was ejected prior to final rest and pronounced deceased at the scene.

There were no other passengers in the car.

One dead, 2 injured in single car accident in Mechanicsville

On April 28 at 2:26 a.m., police, fire and rescue personnel responded to a single-vehicle motor vehicle collision involving a fatality. The collision occurred on North Sandgates Road in the area of Sandgates Trail Lane in Mechanicsville. Trooper First Class M. Pitcher of the Leonardtown Barrack, was the first police officer on the scene and conducted the preliminary investigation.

Preliminary investigation revealed a 1996 Dodge Intrepid was being operated westbound on North Sandgates Road east of Sandgates Trail Lane. The vehicle skidded off the roadway into the grass and struck two large utility poles. The driver, identified as 21-year-old Kelly Marie Cox of Accokeek; and the rear passenger, identified as 23-year-old Patricia Dawn Hampton of Mechanicsville, were found near the vehicle conscious. Both were transported to Prince George's Shock Trauma with non-life threatening injuries.

The front seat passenger in the vehicle, identified as 23-year-old Brittany Lynn Lanham of Mechanicsville, was pronounced deceased on the scene by medical personnel. Ms. Lanham's family was located and notified of the collision. There was no indication of seatbelt usage by any occupant.

Investigators from the Maryland State Police Crash Team responded and assumed the investigation.
