PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. (March 8, 2012)—LaVerne Logan, 85, of Sunderland will compete for a statewide singing title after her stirring performance of the song You Make Me Feel So Young brought her first place at the Calvert County Senior Idol competition held Jan. 27 at the Calvert Pines Senior Center.
Logan will compete for the Maryland Senior Idol title on stage at the Bowie Center for the Performing Arts on April 4. Continuing a singing career that stretches back to the 1940s, Logan now sings with the Variety Players, a group that performs at nursing homes and senior centers throughout Calvert County.
This is the first year the Calvert County Office on Aging hosted the local Senior Idol competition featuring residents age 60 and older displaying their vocal talents. Judges were local performer and Office on Aging Social Services Coordinator Tonya Jackson and Sally Schofield, program assistant at Calvert Pines Senior Center and choreographer of many senior shows. The runner-up at the event was Dale Showalter, 63, of Barstow.
