LA PLATA, Md. (March 5, 2012)—College of Southern Maryland men’s basketball coach Alan Hoyt was named Coach of the Year by the Maryland Junior College (MDJUCO) Athletic Coaches Association, after leading the Hawks to a 10-6 regular season record and fifth-place conference finish.

“I am very honored to receive this award. I would not be in this position without the great support from my wife, staff and players. This award has my name on it, but it comes from us all working together,” Hoyt said, adding that he was honored that the other coaches in the conference felt that he deserved the award. “There is nothing better than recognition from your colleagues.”

The conference named 23 student-athletes to the 2011-12 All-MDJUCO Men’s Basketball first team. CSM freshman Sedric Baker, of Oxon Hill, ranked seventh in the MDJUCO with 17.5 points per game and 6.5 assists per game and received All-Conference second-team honors. “This wouldn’t be possible without my coaches and teammates. I would like to thank them and the other coaches in the conference for allowing to make all-conference and represent my school,” Baker said.

With only three returning players, Hoyt, in his fifth year as head coach, brought the Hawks to a winning regular season after a 4-23 record in the 2010-11 season.

Hoyt grew up in Southern Maryland and played basketball three years at Great Mills High School, leading that team to the Southern Maryland Athletic Conference (SMAC) Championship in 2000. Hoyt played at McDaniel College, where he scored more than 1,000 points during his career. Hoyt served as assistant coach at King’s Christian Academy High School during the 2004-05 season and as assistant coach at St. Mary’s College of Maryland in 2005-06. He is active with summer basketball camps, co-directing the KCA Basketball Camp, while also serving as a staff member at the Coach Wootten Basketball Camp and the St. Mary’s Basketball School.
