Chas. Co. Students Participate in Winter Chess Tournament


LA PLATA, Md. (March 5, 2012)—More than 125 students competed in the Charles County Public Schools annual Winter Chess Tournament held Feb. 25 at Westlake High School. The tournament, sponsored by the school system’s gifted education and instruction departments, is open to any county resident in grades kindergarten through 12.

The tournament follows a Swiss-style format in which each student plays four games. Students competed in five grade-level divisions and trophies were awarded to first- and second-place winners. Other students received medals for placing in their division.

The following students were winners in their division:

Grades kindergarten through second:

-- Christopher Upton, first place, first grade, William B. Wade Elementary School;

-- Ryan Parker, tie for first place, first grade, Malcolm Elementary School;

-- Shawn “Jackson” Amorino, second place, second grade, Wade;

-- Noah Sparks, third place, second grade, Wade;

-- Emily Tonnessen, fourth place, first grade, Wade;

-- Caleb Jenkins, fifth place, first grade, William A. Diggs Elementary School;

-- Rodney Harrison, sixth place, second grade, Mary H. Matula Elementary School; and

-- Joshua MacDonald, seventh place, second grade, Matula.

Grades three and four:

-- Christopher Rand-Crawford, first place, fourth grade, T.C. Martin Elementary School;

-- Nathaniel Lednum, second place, fourth grade, Wade;

-- Braydon McElroy, tie for second place, fourth grade, Diggs;

-- Jacob Stern, third place, third grade, Wade;

-- Brennen Winder, fourth place, fourth grade, Wade;

-- Joseph Papagno, fifth place, third place, Walter J. Mitchell Elementary School;

-- Andrew Cullen, sixth place, third grade, Wade;

-- Eric Fotang, seventh place, fourth grade, Matula;

-- Payton Green, eighth place, fourth grade; Wade; and

-- Alyssa Gerhart, ninth place, third grade, Wade.

Grades five and six:

-- Joshua Sokol, first place, fifth grade, Wade;
