Harley Rider Perishes in Single Vehicle Accident in Calvert

CALIFORNIA, Md. (December 23, 2011)—Police in Calvert County report that Eugene Mctyere Smith, 3rd, 59 of Lusby, perished as the result of injuries received in a motorcycle accident on Thursday around 3:37 p.m. The accident occurred on MD Route 4 approximately 6/10th of a mile south of Ball Road in St. Leonard.

First responders located a 2004 Harley Davidson motorcycle against the guardrail. The operator, Mr. Smith, was ejected and positioned near the motorcycle.

Preliminary investigation revealed that Mr. Smith was traveling south bound on MD Route 4 when the 2004 Harley Davidson he was operating gradually left the roadway. Upon leaving the roadway the motorcycle entered the grass median, which separates the north and south bound lanes of MD Route 4. Shortly after leaving the pavement the motorcycle struck the guardrail causing Smith to be ejected from the vehicle.

Mr. Smith was transported to Calvert Memorial Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead by the Emergency Room Staff.

The final cause of death is pending the autopsy, which is scheduled to be performed today at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore.

Cpl. James Wahlgren of the Crash Reconstruction Team is conducting an investigation into the events which lead up to the collision. Anyone with additional information is asked to contact the Calvert County Sheriff's Office at 410-535-2800.
