St. Mary's School System Adjusts Calendar Due to Irene

LEONARDTOWN, Md. (November 2, 2011)—The 2011-2012 St. Mary's County school system operating calendar has been adjusted due to the inclement weather experienced in August as a result of Hurricane Irene. The changes are as follows:

Schools will reopen on Monday, January 2, 2012, following the winter break. Monday, January 2, 2012, will be a full day of school to make up one of the inclement weather days.

Schools will also be open on Monday, January 23, 2012. Monday, January 23, 2012 will be a two-hour early dismissal day of school to make up one of the inclement weather days. The early dismissal will allow for teachers to complete professional responsibilities for the end of the first semester.

Friday, June 15, 2012 will be added as a two-hour early dismissal day of school to make up one of the inclement weather days. Friday, June 15, 2012 will now be the last day of school for students. The early dismissals at the end of the school year will now be June 13, 14, and June 15, 2012. Further calendar changes may be necessary pending additional inclement weather.

"I recognize that these calendar changes are critical to every parent and staff member. It is important that everyone understand that the calendar adjustments maintain the five built-in inclement weather days for future inclement weather," said Dr. Michael J. Martirano, superintendent of schools in a statement.
