LA PLATA, Md. (October 19, 2011)—North Point High School's It's Academic team placed second at the regional competition held Sept. 17 against Gonzaga College High School of Washington and South County Secondary School of Lorton. The event will air on WRC TV (NBC 4) Oct. 8.
Gonzaga won the competition with a score of 460 points. North Point's team scored 455 points to earn second place. South County came in third with a score of 440 points. The three-member team consists of Alex Corbin, Gaston Lopez and Keith Nottingham. Team coaches are Peggy DeVeny, a literacy instructional assistant, and Maureen Stewart, a foreign languages teacher. North Point's team won second place in the Charles County competition held Dec. 2010, which earned them a chance to compete in a televised competition this school year.
Each year, secondary schools from the Washington D.C. metropolitan area participate in the televised It's Academic program. North Point's team has competed in the fall regional competition the past two years and won last year's competition.
