PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. (July 14, 2011)—Nelson Nims is a long-time resident of Calvert County; he professes to know all the nooks and crannies of the tiny county. It was with this knowledge, and his desire to help people, that he decided to strike out as an entrepreneur.
After spending decades as an expert in the landscaping industry, Nims recent calling is as a purveyor of antiques, collectibles and heirloom furniture. He opened This & That Treasures in Huntingtown in April in the one-time blacksmith shop and garage located across the street from Bowens Grocery and has been busy filling his space with all manner of riches from bygone days.
I get most of my items from auctions and estate sales, he says. I like to keep the shelves filled with a little bit of this and a little bit of that which is where the name comes from. I pick items I believe a variety of customers will like so I pretty much have something for everyone.
The shelves in his 1,000 square-feet space are bursting with knick-knacks, jewelry, baskets, vintage tools, beer steins, glassware and china. He also has a good supply of refinished and refurbished furniture like chairs, shelves and cedar chests. My father is great at fixing and finishing furniture, Nims says. We often work together and he sometimes goes to auctions with me so we can pick out good, quality pieces that he knows he can spruce up.
Nims has a strong focus on customer service and says he enjoys spending time with his customers, getting to know what theyre looking for and helping them pick out the perfect item. I want to be known as a business owner who is successful, friendly and a pleasure to deal with, he says. And he is quick to thank his customers for visiting, no matter whether they make a purchase or not.
