ORLANDO, Fla. (July 5, 2011) /PRNewswire/—Siemens Energy, Inc. and eMeter Corporation have teamed up to supply Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative (SMECO) with eMeter EnergyIP® best-in-class meter data management system (MDMS). SMECO is one of the ten largest customer-owned electric cooperatives in the nation. Using its proven project management capabilities, Siemens will integrate the MDMS with SMECO's key operational and customer service systems. This integration will assist SMECO in reaching the EmPOWER Maryland goals set forth by Governor Martin O'Malley, which target a 15 percent reduction in total electric usage on a per capita basis by 2015.
"Siemens is pleased to aid SMECO in meeting its EmPOWER Maryland goals," said Paul Camuti, president, Smart Grid Applications, Siemens Energy, Inc. "We feel a well-integrated MDMS will provide the framework for SMECO to reduce operational expenses, improve customer service capabilities, and offer time-based rates to optimize the value the Co-op brings to its customer-members."
Siemens will begin implementation of eMeter EnergyIP® as part of SMECO's Smart Meter Project. SMECO's project encompasses an MDMS, Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) technology, and a Web portal solution. SMECO has chosen to work with Sensus to provide the AMI network; Siemens will work hand-in-hand with Sensus to link the AMI system with eMeter EnergyIP.
"After extensive research of the MDMS market place, SMECO chose Siemens because we felt they could provide outage management and field activity processes that are more advanced than their competitors," said David Johnson, SMECO's Meter Operations Director. "Additionally, Siemens and eMeter were able to offer solution implementation and project management expertise that will work well with SMECO's project team. At the end of the day, Siemens and eMeter were the best choice to meet our solution goals."
