NORTH EAST, Md. (06/27/2011)—The Maryland Natural Resources Police (NRP) are investigating a fatal boating accident involving a 45 year-old man from Westminster, Carroll County. This incident marks the 11th fatality in Maryland waters this year.
NRP officers were dispatched to the Chesapeake Isles Community along the Elk River on Saturday to investigate a capsized vessel and persons in distress. Officers determined that the vessel had taken on water before capsizing in a mooring area near the private community. The operator and three passengers were pulled from the water by nearby witnesses who found the operator unconscious. They then administered CPR to the operator prior to the arrival of EMS. The victim was transported to Union Hospital in Elkton where he was pronounced dead.
The three passengers were uninjured during the mishap. The victim's name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
