OCEAN CITY, Md. (June 20, 2011) Deputy State Fire Marshal John Nelson, of the Southern Regional Office, has been named the recipient of the 2010 Deputy State Fire Marshal of the Year award. State Fire Marshal William E. Barnard made the presentation during a ceremony at the Maryland State Firemens Association annual convention in Ocean City today.
Nelson was nominated by his supervisor, Deputy Chief Duane Svites. Nelson was cited for many achievements such as leading his region with 53 fire investigations; conducting a career high 112 fire safety inspections; maintaining a 41% criminal case closure rate; and fulfilling agency needs as an Accelerant K-9 Handler for the past three years.
Deputy Nelson exemplifies the overall desire and commitment our investigators embrace to ensure the safety of Marylands citizens, said Fire Marshal Barnard.
Nelson also serves the community as the fire chief at the Seventh District Volunteer Fire Department in Avenue, St. Mary's County.
