Calvert Co. Head-on Crash Claims One Life; One Seriously Injured


PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. (June 10, 2011)—Police in Calvert County report that a head-on crash between two cars this morning at Dowell Road and Appel Lane in Dowell left one driver dead and the other seriously injured.

Police were called to the scene at 6:35 a.m. Preliminary investigation revealed that a 2002 Toyota Solara, being operated by 21-year-old Matthew Dillan Schultz, of Dowell, was traveling north on Dowell Road. A 2004 Nissan Quest being operated by 81-year-old James Carl Cantrell, Jr., of Springfield, Va., was traveling south on Dowell Road. For unknown reasons, the Toyota crossed the center double yellow line into the south bound lane of Dowell Road. The Toyota and Nissan collided head on.

Mr. Schultz was transported by Maryland State Police Medevac to Prince George's Hospital for serious injuries. Mr. Cantrell succumbed on the scene to injuries sustained from the accident.
