PATROL OFFICERS APPREHEND ROBBERY SUSPECTS: On April 13 at 11:30 p.m., officers responded to Amber Leaf Place in Waldorf for the report of an assault. A preliminary investigation revealed the victims, ages 22 and 23, were at a convenience store on St. Ignatius Way when a male approached and asked for a cigarette. The victims said they had none and got in their car. The suspect apparently saw a pack of cigarettes in the victim's dashboard and became angry. He pulled on the door and tried to get in the vehicle but the victims fled and drove to Amber Leaf Place. Moments later, as they walked toward a house, the suspect, who coincidently was in the area, confronted the victims about the cigarette. He assaulted one victim, stole the purse from another and fled the scene with a group of people who were inside his car. Officers responded and canvassed the area but were unable to locate the suspects or any property.
About two hours later, patrol officers responded to Heathcote Road for a group of disorderly subjects. The people were sent on their way. Several minutes later, the officers learned one of the subjects they had just encountered had an open warrant. Officers canvassed the area and located the man inside a car on St. Charles Parkway. A traffic stop was initiated and the driver, Melvin Wayne Moton, 23, of La Plata, was arrested. During a check of the car, officers discovered a wallet, bank card, camera and other property belonging to the victim of the earlier robbery. Moton was subsequently linked to the robbery and arrested. He was charged with assault and robbery.
