Single Car Accident Leaves 3 Year-old in Critical Condition

PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. (April 18, 2011) — A single vehicle accident in Prince Frederick Sunday afternoon left a three year-old boy in critical condition. The driver and a female passenger were both sent to Calvert Memorial Hospital with minor injuries.

Police identified the driver as Kevin Mark Zylich, 31, and the front seat passenger as Ilea Rose Rodgers, 26, both of Lusby. The child, who was in the rear seat, was identified as Joseph Mark Zylich.

Police believe the vehicle, a 1999 Chevrolet Blazer, rolled over at least once at the traffic circle located at the intersection of Chapline Place and North Prince Frederick Blvd. Police say speed appears to be a factor that contributed to the accident.

Police say Zylich was traveling west on Chapline Place approaching the traffic circle when he failed to negotiate the circle and struck a curb located on the west half of the circle. The vehicle left the roadway, entering the sidewalk and grassy area that surrounds the traffic circle. The vehicle subsequently began to roll. Upon rolling over at least one time, the vehicle came to final rest in the parking lot on its wheels.

Ms. Rodgers and the child were driven to the Calvert Memorial Hospital by a citizen prior to arrival of the emergency personnel. Kevin Zylich remained on the scene and was transported to the Calvert Memorial Hospital via ambulance.

The child sustained life threatening injuries as a result of the collision and was transferred to Children's Hospital in Washington, D.C. via MedStar helicopter. He remains in critical condition at the time of this report.

Ms. Rodgers sustained minor injuries and was treated at CMH and released. Kevin Zylich sustained minor injuries and is in stable condition.
